Rights Respecting Schools

At Deanburn we are continuing our Right Respecting Schools journey which is a 3 stage process. Having already achieved bronze, we have been working towards our silver accreditation, which will be taking place in March.

What is a Rights Respecting School?

Rights respecting schools is an initiative run by UNICEF UK based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. (UNCRC)

The UNCRC is a statement of children’s rights. It has 54 articles that cover all areas of a child’s life. The convention came into force in January 1992 and became part of Scottish law in 2023.

 

Silver: Rights Aware is an accreditation given to schools that are making progress towards embedding children's rights into their practices and policies. It is the second stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA). 

How does UNICEF UK award Silver: Rights Aware? 

  • A Professional Adviser from UNICEF UK assesses the school's work
  • They will meet with staff and pupils to find out what they’ve been doing as a school to promote rights of the child and the impact.   
  • The accreditation is valid for three years

We have been very busy promoting the rights of the child through many different activities such as our articles of the fortnight, home learning/ challenge tasks as well as incorporating this into our lessons and our Rights Knights display board in school. We regularly share our rights learning in our Newsletters and through twitter.

How can parents and carers help?

(UNCRC article 42: all children, young people and adults should know about the Convention.)

 

  • Talk to your children about their rights and what they mean
  • Ask them how they can show RESPECT for the rights
  • Find out more about the UNCRC using some of the websites below
  • Share the language of rights at home
  • Get in touch with us if you would like to know more/help in any way
